Women’s Health
Dr. Aoife Hayden, Dr. Donna Sinnott and Dr. Penny Nolan
Family Planning
We provide pre-pregnancy counselling to help optimise your health if you are planning to conceive. If you are experiencing difficulties becoming pregnant, we can organise initial investigations such as blood tests, semen analysis, and ultrasound scans.
If you are pregnant, we take part in the HSE Maternity and Infant Care Scheme. This scheme offers free antenatal care during your pregnancy, as well as a baby check at 2 weeks and a 6-week postnatal check for both mother and baby.
If you think you may be pregnant, you should arrange an appointment with your GP as early as possible for confirmation. Your GP will then refer you for your first hospital antenatal visit and dating scan. During this appointment, you can also discuss your maternity care options and be registered for the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme.
Cervical Screening
If you have received your Cervical Check letter, please contact reception to make an appointment.
Cervical screening is a method of preventing cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cells in the cervix (lower part of the womb). Cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but it is a test to check the health of the cervix. The National Cervical Screening Programme, Cervical Check, provides free cervical screening to women aged 25 to 65.
Breast Check
Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in Ireland. About 2,700 women get breast cancer in Ireland each year. Most of them (8 out of 10) are over 50, but younger women, and in rare cases men, can also get breast cancer.
If you have any concerns, please book in to have a Breast Check carried out by our GP’s.
Menopause
The menopause is when a woman stops having periods and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. Periods usually start to become less frequent over a few months or years before they stop. Sometimes they can stop suddenly. The menopause is a natural part of ageing. It usually happens between 45 and 55 years of age as a woman’s oestrogen levels decline. The average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51. But around 1 in 100 women experience the menopause before 40 years of age. This is known as premature or early menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency.
When to contact your GP
Talk to your GP if:
- you have menopausal symptoms that are troubling you
- you’re experiencing symptom before 45 years of age
Your GP can usually confirm if you’re menopausal based on your symptoms. If you are under 45, they may take a blood test to check your hormone levels.
